Manual handling is the lifting, lifting, holding, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving of a load by bodily force.
The removal of waste from the office can be a very strenuous activity. Cleaning operatives should therefore be trained in the basics of manual handling including how to lift correctly.
Lifting Correctly:
  1. Assess the load and plan the route prior to the lift.
  2. Remove any obstructions or hazards from your route.
  3. Use mechanical aids where possible.
  4. Wear suitable footwear ideally with steel toe caps.
  5. Beware of sharp objects.
  6. Lift load with heaviest side to the body.
  7. Feet apart, bend knees, keep a straight back.
  8. Keep load close to the body, take a firm grip and lift maintaining a straight back at all times.
  9. Lift smoothly to knee and then to waist level, moving forward without twisting.
  10. Reverse procedure to put the load down.
